Shailene Woodley on Four: 'No Feminine Actors, Please"

From MTV: "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" actress Shailene Woodley has been cast as Tris, and now fans are itching to know who will play love interest Tobias "Four" Eaton. The latest from the casting rumor mill has it that Lucas Till, Alex Pettyfer and Jeremy Irvine are in the running for the role, so when we caught up with Woodley at the Sundance Film Festival, where she was promoting her film "The Spectacular Now," we had to ask how the Four casting process was going.

"Dude, I want to find him. We have been doing some tests. We've been doing some auditions," Woodley said. "We'll see what happens. As of now, we have been scoping out the land. There are a few in particular — two guys — that I think are really great."
Though Woodley didn't name names, she was specific about what traits a would-be Four should possess.

"The thing about Four is that he has to be a man. No feminine actors, please," she said. "You cannot walk in that room in pretty little boots and pretend you're a man. I'm sorry. You need to walk in there, and you need to not have muscles that look good and not actually work. There have been a few guys that have this power about them. It's a natural masculine power that some people have and some people don't. There's nothing good or bad or wrong or right about it. This character needs to be extremely masculine, and his eyes need to scream vulnerability and sensitivity. It's really hard to find in a dude, especially a dude who can act."

The 21-year-old added that the screen-testing process has been less about the particular scenes and more about having that certain something with the men reading for Four.
"It's more just the chemistry between the two of us and seeing if we do have that chemistry or can work on that chemistry — seeing if our back-and-forth dialogue makes any sense with each other," she explained. "There's a lot of standards that have to be met."

As to how she's preparing for what will likely be a demanding role (for example, in more than one scene we see Tris jump onto a moving train), it seems Woodley is preparing more mentally rather than physically.

"I think that a big thing is just pretending that I live in that world. It's a world that's so different from today, but not really," she said. "Thinking of the dystopian world and living in different factions and not being allowed to express your multiple personalities. Being constricted to one thing is going to be the challenge."

Kate Winslet in Talks to Join Divergent Movie

Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet looks set to join the Divergent cast.

Twitter was abuzz with excitement when the official Summit Entertainment twitter account announced that Winslet had been cast, but the tweet was deleted a short time later. Looks like the deal isn't quite yet sealed. Hopefully we'll get an update soon! In other news, it seems the studio is now looking at older guys for the role of Four. We're happy they're so dedicated in finding the right guy, and certainly wont be complaining about about a more mature actor.

Variety reports: Though Summit and Neil Burger’s “Divergent” is still on the lookout for its male lead to pair with Shailene Woodley, it may have found a major co-star for her with Kate Winslet in talks to join the movie.
It is unknown what part Winslet would play in the film.
Though Winslet is no stranger to starring in a big-budget-tentpole, the film would mark her first opportunity at a possible franchise.

Summit is also still trying to find its male lead to pair with Woodley. The studio recently tested Lucas Till, Alex Pettyfer and Jeremy Irvine, but sources say the shingle may go older after not finding its guy with the latest readings.

CONFIRMED: Shailene Woodley Will Play 'Tris Prior' In Divergent!

CASTING NEWS! We finally have confirmation of Shailene Woodley playing the role of Tris Prior in the Divergent Movie! We knew previously that the actress was in final talks to star as our heroine, but we've recieved no official word. Well, now the actress has confirmed it herself.

Shailene chatted to MTV's Josh Horowitz in her first interview regarding the Divergent, while promoting The Spectacular Now at the Sundance Film Festival. Specifically, she spoke about what inspired her to take on the role.

"After I read the book, I was really profoundly moved, and it's really metaphorical for things that are going on today, specifically things that I'm passionate about and things that I want to make public and things that I want to educate people on," Shailene said. "So I think it's a really great platform, not only artistically but also from a human level just to expose these kind of messy, nasty things that are going on in our country." More Actors Linked to the Role of Four

Here's the latest regarding the coverted role of Four! As we grow more anxious, new names are popping up:

Variety reports: Summit is getting closer to finding its male lead for “Divergent” opposite Shailene Woodley, considered one of the more sought-after roles for a young actor.

Sources tell Variety that Lucas Till, Jeremy Irvine and Alex Pettyfer will test for the role later this week. Summit previously tested Till, Brenton Thwaites, Luke Bracey and Jack Reynor in November.

Though no one is viewed as a front-runner at the moment, sources add with Till having already tested once, he may have a slight advantage against. The APA- and WCM-repped Till has been busy, having already filmed Relativity’s “Paranoia” and “Stoker” which both bow later this year. He’s currently filming Weinsten’s “Kristy.” The WME-repped Pettyfer was last seen in Warner Bros. “Magic Mike” and recently wrapped production on Lee Daniels’ “The Butler.”

'Divergent' Movie WILL be Filmed in Chicago

According to The Chicago Sun Times, the Divergent movie will be true to the book and film scenes in Chicago:

"The film, based on the popular book trilogy for young adults titled “Divergent,” will star actress Shailene Woodley, who recently starred in the hit George Clooney film “The Descendants.”
Gov. Pat Quinn’s Illinois Film Office — as well as the massive film studio Cinespace — worked hard to recruit the gig, which is expected to bring the state tons of cash and lure the same teen audience who ensured the monetary success of the “Twilight” film series and “The Hunger Games,” both of which are based on books.
“They’ve been busy for months wooing a new blockbuster to Illinois,” said the source. The movie is about a teenage girl who lives in a dystopian Chicago society divided into factions based on different virtues. Filmmakers “fell in love” with various shooting locations around Chicago, according to the source."

Interview with 'Divergent' Movie Screenwriter Evan Daugherty

As we know, Evan Daugherty is writing the screenplay for the Divergent Movie, and thanks to Bookish, we get a great inside look at what the script will be like and the adaptation challenges he faced:
"Screenwriter Evan Daugherty has had quite the year.

His script for “Snow White and the Huntsman” (which sold in a massive Hollywood bidding war) was realized as a blockbuster film starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, and his second script, “Killing Season”–starring John Travolta and Robert De Niro–is in production and set to release next year.

Thanks to Daugherty’s whirlwind success, the offers have been rolling in–one of which happens to be the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s beloved dystopian YA novel “Divergent.”
The sequel to the runaway best-seller “Insurgent” has also been a top seller since its release in April 2012. In development by the studio behind the Twilight and Hunger Games movies, the project, set to release in May 2014, is on the heels of some major buzz as Shailene Woodley has reportedly neared a deal to play protaganist Tris, and actors are lining up to play her love interest, Four. But, lucky for YA fans, Daugherty was able to give us the early scoop on his vision for the script:

Four Actors Tested For "Chemistry" With Shailene Woodley?

According to Deadline: Summit Entertainment is bearing down on the male lead in Divergent, the adaptation of the Neil Burger-directed adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel that will star Shailene Woodley. She’s the next hot gal after a breakout performance in The Descendants, followed by scoring the Mary Jane role in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. I’m told that Summit held Divergent “chemistry” readings yesterday that paired Woodley with four young actors: Luke Bracey, Brenton Thwaites, Lucas Till and Jack Reynor.
