You’re coming up in Divergent, a dystopian sci-fi based on the Veronica Roth novel. It’s an unusual role for you, right?
It’s very different. I play a baddie. I play a real baddie. And I’m really mean. It was really, really great – just to do something so totally and utterly different. It was a futuristic sci-fi with the most fantastic script, and it’s really based on the idea that in the future you no longer come from a family but you come from a faction, and there are five factions. And my character Jeanine is the head of the intelligence faction, but she also wants to take over the whole world.
So this was a fascinating world to dip into?
I completely found it fascinating. I didn’t find it in any way teen, tween… it’s quite sophisticated writing, very sophisticated themes. And what I loved about it too is that it doesn’t matter how old you are or what’s happening in your own life, we will always want to come from somewhere and belong somewhere, and come from something in order to count. It really taps into those values, I think, in a really clever and sometimes sinister.
Yesterday Kate featured in a new clip revealed exclusively by EW.com:
When Divergent hits theaters next month, moviegoers will get a chance to see Shailene Woodley’s Tris Prior and Kate Winslet’s Jeanine Matthews go head to head. But for now, fans can enjoy the following exclusive clip, which features Winslet and Woodley discussing their characters’ respective agendas.
The clip also features a few more glimpses at the film itself, including a flash of Four (Theo James) being captured and led away by Jeanine’s henchmen, and a rebel army clearing out Tris’ old Abnegation faction. Watch the exclusive clip below:
