We've been following the journey of The Fault in our Stars from book to screen after it was announced two of our amazing Divergent cast members would be playing the leads. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort star as "Hazel" and "Gus" in the movie adaptation of John Greens No.1 best seller.
So whats the story?
Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for
the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their
relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other
constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic
leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.
We were invited to a screening earlier this month, and highly recommend you guys check this movie out. Our duo do not disappoint and deserve all the amazing praise they have been garnering. Shailene's performance is incredible, so moving and sincere, you feel everything with her. When she cries it's like your heart is being ripped out. It's hard to imagine anyone else doing justice to that role. Ansel as Gus is charismatic, funny, and larger than life. And ultimately, heartbreaking. As his first big lead role it's a revelation, a chance to experience more of what he's capable of. Hazel fell in love with Gus "slowly, then all at once." We fell in love within about 5 minutes.
Whether you've read the book or not, you cannot help but be touched by this story. Though at times it is painful and will make you sad and possibly dissolve in a puddle of tears; in the end you are left with a renewed appreciation for life. For the big things, the small things, the mundane and the extraordinary. Hazel and Gus knew they needed to make each moment count, and that is something we should all be reminded of more often.
