MTV: Zoe Kravitz Talks About Scenes Between CHRISTINA & TRIS in INSURGENT

MTV chats to Zoe Kravitz (Christina) about INSURGENT:
-Great news from the “Divergent” universe, gang — not only is the special-features-loaded Blu-ray officially out on Tuesday (August 5), but the whole cast and crew is already hard at work filming scenes for the sequel, “Insurgent.” Speaking like a Candor, that’s pretty freaking awesome news.

However, don’t expect all the characters you fell in love with in the first movie to be quite as eager as we are to return to its chaotic universe. As Zoe Kravitz — who plays Cristina in the films — told MTV News over the phone, her girl power fueled friendship with Tris (Shailene Woodley) will be in serious jeopardy over the death of Cristina’s boyfriend Will in “Divergent.”

The audience sees what happens to Will in the first film, but Cristina doesn’t know yet,” she explained. “She doesn’t know that Tris has anything to do with what happened to Will. At the beginning of the film, she’s excited to see Tris again and she’s hopeful that Will is still out there somewhere, hiding. When she learns that Will is in fact dead and that it was Tris who killed him, it starts a huge problem between Tris and Cristina, and affects their friendship.”

So apparently, the fact that Will had been turned into a killing machine by Erudite’s serum — leaving Tris with little choice — will be lost on Cristina. It will be tough for the audience to lose the lighthearted dynamic between the ladies, and Kravitz insisted that it was just as tough for she and Woodley, who became very closing while they filmed “Divergent.”

We’re still in the middle of [filming the fight] — we just started the part where me and her have a confrontation,” she continued. “It’s hard pretending to be mad at someone that you’re not mad at, but I think we understand the importance of our friendship, and we can both imagine what would happen if we didn’t have that anymore. That, I think, helps us understand what this rift is doing to Tris and Cristina; what the gravity of that is.”

However much of a bummer this news is (and it’s a major bummer), Kravitz also explained that “Insurgent” will be able to dig a whole lot deeper than its predecessor, meaning more time for other factions like Amity and Candor that were sidestepped in the first movie.

The first film is always introducing the world and the situation and the characters,” Kravitz said. “A lot of explaining needs to happen, a lot of exposition. In the second film you know the characters, you know the world, you know the situations, so we’re able to focus more on the relationships and the journey instead of trying to set the scene so much. You see layers of characters and layers of story, and it’s a bit more intriguing.”

Of course, since Kravitz has now spent months of her life filming scenes in the “Divergent” universe of dystopian Chicago, we just had to ask which of the five factions — Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite — she and her costars would choose now that they fully know the ropes.

Me and Shae would be in Amity,” she said. “That’s definitely what I would be in. It’s the best of everything. I’m really into peace and love and farming — all of that looks great. Theo [James]… maybe Candor. He definitely says whatever comes into his head.”

“Insurgent” will surge into theaters on March 20, 2015.
